The kanji, or written characters, for “manga” literally translates to “whimsical drawings.” Centuries before modern printing, when they became standard forms of Japanese books, manga were parts of elaborate scrolls and paintings, similar to what was being done in nearby China. By the mid-20th century, manga in Japanese society had been reinvented as cheap forms of entertainment that, over the decades, once again became popular art forms (as well as affordable ways to have fun!).
