About the Actual Aircraft

First flown in 1939, the P-38 Lightning is a twin-boom, twin-engine American military fighter aircraft. The J model had its intercooler position changed and was equipped with electric dive brakes, with nearly 3,000 units produced starting in 1943. Deployed across various fronts from Europe to the Pacific, the P-38 produced numerous flying aces. In Europe, it was also assigned to the USAAF's 8th Air Force, escorting bombers on raids to Germany from bases in England.
