About the Actual Aircraft
First flown in 1939, the P-38 Lightning is a twin-boom, twin-engine American military fighter aircraft. Known for its pursuit of high speed and heavy armament, the aircraft features a distinctive style with two turbocharged Allison V12 liquid-cooled engines, boasting a top speed of over 600 km/h. The J model had its intercooler position changed and was equipped with electric dive brakes, with nearly 3,000 units produced starting in 1943. Deployed across various fronts from Europe to the Pacific, the P-38 produced numerous flying aces. In Europe, it was also assigned to the USAAF's 8th Air Force, escorting bombers on raids to Germany from bases in England.
