The Richelieu was commissioned in April 1940 as an improved battleship based on the previous Dunkirk class.
The characteristic of this class is that two quadruple main gun turrets are concentrated at the front of the ship, and the three secondary guns at the rear are not dual-purpose guns, but are divided into anti-ship and anti-aircraft guns. In addition, the funnel is a modern MACK and also functions as a rear mast. This class boasts excellent concentrated defense and high speed performance, and is a well-balanced ship worthy of being the last French battleship.
