The third ship of the Vittorio Veneto class, the Roma, was completed in June 1942 as an improved version of the first and second ships with some design changes. However, on September 8, 1943, Italy surrendered to the Allies, and the Roma departed La Spezia to be handed over, but the next day it was attacked by German Do217 bombers and sunk by two Fritz guided bombs, a new weapon.
