Description

The Bismarck was equipped with four twin 38cm guns and had a standard displacement of over 40,000 tons. It was the largest battleship in the world at the time, and was commissioned in August 1940. It was supposed to be the core of the German Navy along with its sister ship, Tirpitz (commissioned in February 1941). However, during Operation Rheinübung in the North Atlantic in May 1941, it sank the battlecruiser Hood, a symbol of the British Navy at the time, with a single shot in its first battle, but was subsequently attacked by the British fleet in pursuit of the Bismarck, and met its end.
