Shioya was completed in November 1943 as the second Ashizuri-class tanker for the carrier task force, capable of replenishing two large aircraft carriers' worth of aircraft fuel, as well as equipment, ammunition, and food.
After being commissioned, it was engaged in transporting fuel and supplies in the south, but was sunk in June 1944 by an attack by a US Navy submarine without being able to support the task force as it was intended.
