Published nearly 30 picture books, beginning with 'Little Blue and Little Yellow' in 1959.
Received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for three works: 'Swimmy', 'Frederick', and 'Alexander and the Wind-up Mouse'.
Won 21 awards across 11 works in the US and Germany as well.
Passed away in Tuscany, Italy, in 1999.
