The 221 series, introduced in 1989, is a DC suburban train designed for the "New Rapid" service on the Tokaido Main Line. It was the first newly designed and manufactured train by JR West. Currently, it operates across a wide region, including the Kansai Main Line (Yamatoji Line) to the Osaka Loop Line, the Nara Line, the San-in Main Line (Sagano Line), the Kusatsu Line, and the Kosei Line. From 2013, it underwent refurbishment with fall prevention holsters installed on the front, and headlights were changed to HID lamps with fog lights.
- Models are based on NA413 and NA414 formations from the Nara branch of the Suita General Rolling Stock Yard.
- Accurately reproduces the features of overhaul vehicles, including the reinforced front obstacle deflector, fall prevention holster, and HID lamps with fog light headlights.
- The roof lightning arrester reflects post-update designs.
- Each lead car features illuminated head/tail lights and front displays, with a switchable off option. Light units use white LEDs.
- Fall prevention holsters between lead cars are recreated as separate parts.
- Includes printed markings for weak air-conditioned cars, wheelchair and stroller signs, door switches, end notations, safety device notations, and door cock markings.
- Equipped with body-mount close-couplers (without hooks) on all cars; electrical connections included for lead cars.
- Slotless motor employed for smooth and quiet operation.
- Side destination display sections are recreated in black with included stickers for updated priority seating information.
- Front display is pre-printed with "Q Yamatoji Rapid Nara." The basic set includes exchangeable front displays "O Yamatoji Rapid Osaka Loop Line," "F Direct Rapid Osaka," and the add-on set includes "O Yamatoji Rapid Osaka Loop Line," "Q Section Rapid Kamo," with two blank displays included in each set.
