The 221 series, introduced in 1989, is a direct current suburban train designed for the Tokaido Main Line's "Special Rapid" service. It is the first newly designed and manufactured train by JR West. Currently, it is actively operating across various regions, including the Kansai Main Line (Yamatoji Line) system, the Osaka Loop Line, the Nara Line, the Sanin Main Line (Sagano Line), the Kusatsu Line, and the Kosei Line. Since 2013, a refurbishment project has been carried out, equipping the trains with fall-prevention hoods at the front and upgrading the headlights to HID lamps with fog lights.
