The Series 583 train appeared in 1968 as a dual-purpose, direct/alternating current express-type train featuring both sleeping and seating arrangements. Even after it was withdrawn from regular operation in the 2000s under JR East Japan, a few units of the 583 Series continued to operate, mainly serving temporary and group trains. These trains were often seen in the Tokyo and Kansai areas with exterior modifications such as the installation of a train radio antenna on the lead car and gray paintwork on the bogies and underfloor equipment. The Series 583 was predominantly operated on the "Wakuwaku Dream" train, which connected regions like Akita and Aomori to Maehama on the Keiyo Line.
