The sleeper express "Hamanasu" was a popular JR Hokkaido sleeper express train that operated from Aomori to Sapporo through the Seikan Tunnel. It was introduced with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988 and connected versatile vehicles with B sleeper cars, carpet cars, Dream Cars (reclining seat cars), reserved seats, and free seating. The train was highly popular but was retired in March 2016 with the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
