The 0 Series Shinkansen has been continuously enhanced since the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen in 1964 until 1986. From 1981, the newly manufactured units were labeled as the final version 2000 series, with a total of 309 units produced. The 2000 series is based on the 1000 series, which has smaller side windows and features an expanded seat pitch. After the transition to JR, all units were inherited by JR Central and JR West, retiring in 2008.
