The DF50 is a diesel locomotive developed for the elimination of smoke on non-electrified branch lines. The prototype model was manufactured in 1957 (Showa 32) and mass production continued until 1963 (Showa 38). It employs an electric transmission system that drives the main motor using DC power generated by a diesel engine linked generator. The 0 series, in particular, features an engine from Shin-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries with a technology partnership with the Swiss Sulzer company, and was extensively active in regions like the Dosan Main Line (currently Dosan Line) in Shikoku.
