The EF58 66 is part of the final group (third production batch) of EF58 locomotives, featuring large front windows, and was introduced in Showa 28 (1953). Originally assigned to the Tokyo Locomotive Depot, it was later transferred to the Shimonoseki Locomotive Depot before finally moving to the Ryuge Locomotive Depot in Showa 53 (1978). During its late period at the Tokyo Locomotive Depot, it was fitted with cold-resistant equipment such as icicle cutters on the front, and upon its transfer to Ryuge, its headlights were upgraded to a double configuration. By the end of the Japan National Railways era, it was popular as the only large-window locomotive apart from the specially designated locomotive 61, and it pulled night local trains such as the "Hayatama." Although it was scrapped in Showa 61 (1989), it was preserved until it was dismantled in Heisei 8 (1996).
