The VT18.16 was a prestigious express diesel railcar manufactured in the 1960s by the East German National Railways (DR). Each of the two leading cars was equipped with a 900 horsepower engine (1000 horsepower in mass production models), boasting an output of 1,800 horsepower (2,000 horsepower) with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. It was named VT18.16 by combining it with the German word for diesel-powered cars, "Verbrennungistriebwagen." After a change in naming conventions, it was renamed BR175 and was used in 4 to 6-car formations for international train operations. It is especially known for its role in the "Vindobona" service, connecting Berlin and Vienna (Austria), becoming synonymous with this format. After being retired, some units are preserved in various locations across Germany, and one set is being restored by a preservation group for a planned revival as an international train in 2025.
