The Series 50 Model 51 Passenger Car was introduced in 1979 as a general-purpose passenger car for Hokkaido. Based on the Series 50 passenger car for Honshu, it featured double windows on the sides and cold and snow-resistant equipment, including an axle generator on the bogie. It was used extensively on Hokkaido's main lines but was retired in 1994, earlier than the Series 50 cars for warmer regions. This vehicle is essential when discussing Hokkaido's passenger trains.
