The 813 series is JR Kyushu's first VVVF inverter train, which began operations in 1994. It was manufactured over an extended period until 2009, and throughout its production, various modifications were made to adapt to different forms and usage scenarios. These trains are currently active, mainly in the Fukuoka metropolitan area. The 2200 series was introduced to enhance transportation capacity by partially replacing the reversible cross seats of the 200 series with long seats. These trains operate as a nine-car formation by coupling up to three sets. Additionally, in recent years, work has been underway to remove transformers for instruments installed around the pantographs.
