The E231 series, which has been active on the Joban Line, debuted in 2002, replacing the 103 series. It consists of 10-car and 5-car formations, operating as the longest 15-car train among the commuter-type E231 series. The body features a blue-green line, which is the line color, and an Uguisu color line to prevent confusion with the local lines. Alongside the E531 series for mid-distance travel, the E231 series operates between Ueno and Toride on the Joban Rapid Line and between Abiko and Narita on the Narita Line. Since the opening of the Ueno-Tokyo Line in 2015, its network expanded, providing access to Shinagawa.
