The DF50 was developed for the purpose of eliminating smoke in non-electrified secondary lines. The prototype model was manufactured in 1957, followed by additional units produced until 1963. This diesel locomotive uses an electric transmission system that powers the main electric motor with direct current generated by a generator directly connected to the diesel engine. The 0 series, in particular, featured an engine developed by Shin Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in collaboration with Swiss Sulzer and was widely active in the Shikoku region, including the Dosan Main Line (now the Dosan Line).
