The D51 steam locomotive was primarily manufactured as a freight locomotive between Showa 11 (1936) and 20 (1945), with a production total of 1,115 units, making it the largest number of manufactured JNR locomotives. It was active nationwide and affectionately known as "Degoichi." Its performance was notable not only in freight trains but also in passenger and mixed trains.

The power pack features a high output (1.2A) "Power Pack Standard SX" with a special AC adapter for the starter set. The design of the included power pack has been changed to black.
