The 701 series is a lightweight stainless steel, three-door, 20-meter-class AC suburban train introduced in 1993 to replace passenger coaches and JNR-style trains in the Tohoku area. It features a VVVF inverter control system and long seats, facilitating easy movement within the car for single-operator service. Available in two-car and four-car configurations, these trains are operated based on transport demand.
Releasing both four-car and two-car formations active in the Sendai area. The four-car set is non-single operator compatible, while the two-car set supports single operation. This distinction is reflected in the design. Upgrade includes more realistic obstacle deflectors. Each set includes a motor car, allowing for versatile configurations such as 2-car, 4-car, 2+2, 2+2+2, 2+4 combinations.

- All cars feature body mount couplers without hooks. Includes electrical connectors that can be attached to the front section.
- Front display "Sendai" installed. Includes replacement plain front displays and destination display stickers.
- Slotless motor provides smooth and quiet performance. Integrated demagnetizing plate.
- Power car set as KUMOHA701 for both sets. Single-bogie drive, traction tire equipped, DCC friendly.
- Four-car set comes in a case that can hold up to six cars. Includes space for storing the two-car set.
