The Shinano Railway SR1 series is the first new model train operated by Shinano Railway, running between Karuizawa and Myoko Kogen, with the section between Shinonoi and Nagano managed by JR East. This series was introduced based on the E129 series, which has a proven track record in snowy Niigata areas. Since its establishment due to the construction of the Nagano and Hokuriku Shinkansen, Shinano Railway had been operating the 115 series transferred from JR since its opening in 1997. However, in 2020, the SR1 series was newly manufactured and introduced as a replacement. Initially, three sets of liner vehicles were introduced, followed by the general-purpose vehicles the following year, with four sets of the 200 series and three sets of the 300 series without the frost-removing pantograph being introduced.
