The Taiwan Shinkansen is Taiwan's first bullet train, opened in 2007 by Taiwan High Speed Rail (commonly known as THSR) on a 345km route between Taipei and Zuoyung (Kaohsiung).
The track and facilities are provided by the European Union, but the carriages are based on the 700 series bullet trains used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, and are the first Japanese bullet trains to be deployed overseas.
Compared to the 700 series bullet trains, the nose is shorter, and the orange stripe extending from the end of the carriages is a major feature. The 700T, developed to suit Taiwan's climate and environment, has a maximum speed of 300km/h and is in service on the route between Nangang (Taipei) and Zuoyung (Kaohsiung).
