The AE86 Trueno, which debuted in May 1983, chose to adopt an FR layout despite the trend towards FF layouts at the time. The engine was changed from the previous 2T-G to the newly developed 4A-G. Body variations, like its sibling Levin, came in two types: a 3-door hatchback and a 2-door coupe. The model names changed depending on the engine: AE86 for the 4A-G engine, and AE85 for the 1500cc 3A-U engine. Its popularity remains undiminished to this day.
