New Encounters and a Sense of Fresh Action
The fifth-generation Familia, launched in 1980, switched to a front-wheel-drive (FF) system. Mazda developed a new platform named the BD platform and introduced the "SS Suspension" with a modified parallel link strut system at the rear. The newly developed E-type engine, awarded by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, achieves both low fuel consumption and high power. Combining "fuel efficiency," "performance," and "space," the Familia won the first Car of the Year Japan award.
