The M109 self-propelled howitzer is a second-generation post-war self-propelled artillery developed in the United States. Production of this vehicle began in 1962 as a successor to the M44 155mm self-propelled howitzer, with approximately 2,000 units produced for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Over time, the main gun was replaced with a new model and further modernizations were implemented, resulting in a total production of about 10,000 units in the series. The M109A7 is an upgraded vehicle that shares its engine and transmission with the M2 Infantry Combat Vehicle, aimed at reducing maintenance costs.
