Initially powered by a German MAN straight-six diesel engine, it switched to a Renault straight-six turbocharged diesel engine in 1983. Besides land transportation, the VAB can navigate on water using its twin water-jet propulsion at the rear. Its armament includes a 12.7mm M2 heavy machine gun. Apart from the French Army, it has been adopted by various nations including Morocco and Norway.
