About the Car
Audi, having introduced 4WD technology into the rally racing world and demonstrated its overwhelming power, aimed next for the challenge of 4WD in circuit racing. Based on the 4-door sedan A4 Quattro, the car made its debut in the Class 2 touring car race in 1995 and participated in the British BTCC in 1996. The engine was a longitudinally mounted inline 4-cylinder 2-liter that produced over 300 horsepower, delivering power to all four wheels through a 6-speed sequential gearbox via the Quattro system. Despite the A4 4WD being given a 100kg "weight handicap" against 2WD cars, it won the BTCC championship in 1996. In 1998, it also competed in the German Super Touring Championship, further proving the effectiveness of 4WD on tarmac-based circuit courses.
