About the Actual Rocket:
- The Redstone Rocket was the base for launching the first American artificial satellite and the first manned space flight.
- Initially launched in 1953, it became a leading rocket for the U.S. throughout the 1960s.
- Wernher von Braun, involved in V2 rocket development in wartime Germany, contributed to its development.
- The first developed was the PGM-11 Redstone, a surface-to-surface ballistic missile.
- It was a disposable rocket using liquid fuel and was deployed and operated by the U.S. military from June 1958 to June 1964.
- In January 1958, the Jupiter-C version, known as Junos I, launched America's first artificial satellite, Explorer I.
- The Sparta Rocket, combining two solid fuel rockets atop the Redstone, was manufactured and provided to Australia to launch the country's first artificial satellite, WRESAT.
