About the Actual Aircraft

The P-47D Thunderbolt, a significant fighter aircraft developed and deployed by the U.S. Army during World War II, featured the Pratt & Whitney R-2800, an 18-cylinder radial air-cooled engine producing 2000 horsepower, the most robust of its time. Equipped with an exhaust turbine, it achieved a top speed of 690 km/h. First flown in May 1941, it joined the European theater by 1943. Initially, it escorted Allied bombers, but as the P-51 Mustang emerged, it shifted to ground attack roles, remaining active until the war concluded. Numerous modifications were applied during its service, with the D-type becoming the most prominent version, featuring significant design alterations, including a bubble canopy for improved visibility. Over 12,000 units of the D-type and its variations were produced.
