About the Real Machine
After World War II, the arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States led to the development of long-range ballistic missiles. The Atlas missile was the first to be successfully operationally deployed by the United States. Developed by the Convair division of General Dynamics, the Atlas missile had its first successful launch in December 1957. In 1959, the mass-production version, Atlas D, was introduced and initially deployed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with the 576th Strategic Missile Squadron.
The Atlas D carried a powerful 1.4-megaton nuclear warhead with a range beyond 14,000 km. It featured a liquid-fueled rocket with a main engine, boosters, and vernier engines. Besides its role as an intercontinental ballistic missile, it was crucial in space exploration, launching both spy and exploratory satellites to destinations like the Moon, Venus, and Mars.
