The E2-1000 series was developed in 2001 for the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen Hachinohe line, based on the existing E2-0 series. Compared to the E2-0 series, the E2-1000 series features larger side windows and introduces a single-arm pantograph.
From 2010, the updated models came with expanded destination displays changed to a full-color type. Since March 2012, it has been operated on the Tokyo to Fukushima route in conjunction with the E3 series Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa," replacing the older E4 series. Currently, it is primarily in operation on the Tohoku Shinkansen "Nasuno."
