The 789-0 Series debuted in 2002 as a limited express train operating between Hachinohe and Hakodate through the Seikan Tunnel, timed with the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen to Hachinohe.

- Comes with a specialized hood frame and TN coupler with obstacle deflector for coupling with the 6-car set; can be attached to the KUHA789-200 side of the 6-car set
- MOHA788-300 is equipped with a tightly coupled TN coupler on the side facing the 6-car set
- Front end crossing plate can be attached with a jig or by cutting the fitting leg part for attachment with double-sided tape
- Comes with "Super Hakucho" pre-printed train mark
- Equipped with constant lighting circuit boards for head and tail lights and train mark, with ON-OFF switch
- Head and tail lights, train mark illuminated by white LEDs
- Train numbers are selectable and supported with a transfer sheet (included with the 98895 6-car set)
