Series E233-0 was introduced in 2005 to replace the 201 series on the Chuo Line. In preparation for the introduction of Green Cars on the Chuo Line, modifications to accommodate these cars began in 2019. This included installing platform detection devices, additional power supply units, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet in car No. 6, adjacent to the Green Car.
With the launch of the Green Car service in March 2025, from around October 2024, two double-decker Green Cars will be added to the existing 10-car formations, expanding them to 12-car formations, which will gradually begin operation.
The increased length to a 12-car formation also resulted in a change to the operational section, which will now only cover the Chuo Line from Tokyo to Otsuki and the Ome Line from Tachikawa to Ome. The H formation, capable of coupling and splitting, will continue to operate beyond Otsuki Station, with a 4-car formation entering the Fujikyu Line. The 8-car formations, detached at Otsuki Station, will also operate as local trains between Otsuki and Takao.
