The Hokutosei was a sleeper limited express train that debuted in 1988 to coincide with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, operating between Ueno and Sapporo. It was renowned for its luxurious features, including private compartments and a lounge car.
In March 2008, during a revision of the Hokutosei's operations to a single round trip, the train composition was altered. Cars 1 to 6 were owned by JR Hokkaido, while cars 7 to 11 and the power car were owned by JR East.
From February 2011, due to reasons such as maintaining reserve trains, car 2 was modified to include open-plan B class sleeping cars, and prominently featured the unique OHANEFU24-500 series cars.
With the timetable revision in March 2015, the regular operation of the Hokutosei ended, and subsequent operations as a temporary train until August were conducted exclusively with JR East-owned cars, marking the end of mixed composition operations during the same period.
