The limited express "Naha" debuted in October 1968 as a daytime express connecting Osaka to West Kagoshima. In March 1975, it transitioned to a sleeper train using the 583 series, and in February 1984, it began operating as a Blue Train with 24 series sleeping cars. After the division and privatization of Japan National Railways, it was operated by JR Kyushu using 24 series trains, incorporating vehicles like the OHA 24 type 300 series "Legato Seat" seating car, the OHANEFU 25 type 2100 (2200) series two-person B compartment sleeper "Duet," and the SUHANE 25 type 2100 series one-person B compartment sleeper "Solo."
In March 2004, the operating section was shortened to run between Shin-Osaka and Kumamoto. In October 2005, the service was combined with the "Akatsuki," and the configuration was shortened, leading to the discontinuation of the OHA 24 type 300 series "Legato Seat." Ultimately, the "Naha" train itself was discontinued in March 2008 alongside the "Akatsuki," concluding a long history of overnight train services between Kansai and Kyushu.
