The limited express "Naha" debuted in October 1968 as a daytime express connecting Osaka and Nishi-Kagoshima. From March 1975, it operated as a sleeper express using Series 583, and from February 1984, it ran as a Blue Train using Series 24 sleeper carriages. After the privatization and division of Japan National Railways, it operated under JR Kyushu using Series 24 carriages, which included the OHANE 24-300 series "Legato Seats," the OHANEFU 25-2100 (2200) series with two-person B-type compartment sleepers "Duet," and the SUHANE 25-2100 series with one-person B-type compartment sleepers "Solo."
In March 2004, the service route was shortened to run between Shin-Osaka and Kumamoto. Furthermore, in October 2005, it began operating in combination with the "Akatsuki," leading to a shortened configuration, ending the operation of the OHANE 24-300 series "Legato Seats." The train service of "Naha," along with "Akatsuki," was discontinued in March 2008, marking the end of the long history of overnight trains between Kansai and Kyushu.
