The 201 series is a commuter train introduced by Japanese National Railways (JNR) in 1979. It was the first JNR vehicle to adopt armature chopper control, making it an energy-efficient and low-maintenance train. The 201 series for the Tokaido-Sanyo Main Line (Keihanshin Local Line) appeared in 1983, sporting a sky-blue color and playing an active role primarily on this line.
From 2003, refurbishment work known as the "30N Improvement" was carried out, significantly altering both the exterior and interior. Furthermore, around 2005, the obstacle deflector was upgraded to a reinforced variant. Between 2005 and 2006, the introduction of the 321 series led to the replacement of the 201 series, with all units being reassigned to the Osaka Loop Line or Yamatoji Line by March 2007.
