The 117 series is a suburban train introduced in 1979 to enhance passenger service between Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe.
The SUN LINER was a rapid train established between Okayama and Fukuyama in March 1989 and was later renamed SAN LINER. In 1992, the 117 series trains became surplus and were introduced to this route with a new look, featuring a unique livery based on white with yellow and red gradients, drawing significant attention. Subsequently, modifications for one-man operation were implemented, and the service continued; however, by the later years, the paint scheme was simplified, and the SAN LINER livery was retired after 2016.
