The 227 Series 500 Subseries is a new model developed for the Okayama and Bingo areas and has been operated by JR West Japan since July 2023. It primarily serves on the Sanyo Main Line, Hakubi Line, Uno Line, and Honshi-Bisan Line. While it follows the design of the 227 Series 0 Subseries active in the Hiroshima area, there are differences in fine specifications such as seat arrangement.
There are currently plans to introduce thirteen 2-car configurations and twenty-five 3-car configurations, which are being added to the fleet.
