The KIHA147 series is a modified version of the KIHA47 series 0 and 1000 series, inherited by JR Kyushu, with engine upgrades starting around 1989 aimed at increasing speed on lines such as the Sasaguri Line and the Kyudai Main Line. Most vehicles have retained the louvers on the front side of the body, creating a distinctive appearance compared to the similarly updated KIHA47 series 8000 and 9000 series. As of 2024, these trains are mainly concentrated at the Nogata Vehicle Center and are active on the Gotohji Line and the Hita-Hikosan Line.
To commemorate the opening of the Hita-Hikosan Line BRT Hikoboshi Line in August 2023, a special wrapped train featuring the BRT Hikoboshi Line logo and line color has been operating since January 2024.
