The KIHA 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car that appeared in 1977, and 888 cars were manufactured.
JR East inherited 219 KIHA 40 series and played an active part in various parts of the Tohoku region.
With the advent of new vehicles, KIHA 40 series general-purpose vehicles in each region of Tohoku were replaced, and the last remaining Akita area was retired due to the timetable revision on March 13, 2021.
On the Gono Line connecting Higashi-Noshiro and Hirosaki, in addition to vehicles painted with a blue band in cream color, KIHA 40 series restored to the metropolitan area color that was painted at the time of appearance was active.
On the Gono Line, when retiring, the original destination sign (Sabo) will be posted on some trains from November 17, 2021, and from December 26 to retirement, "Thank you KIHA 40/48 type" head Mark decoration was given.
