Series 485-3000 is a limited express train that was introduced in 1996, primarily through the renewal work of Series 485-1000. The Aomori Vehicle Center's 485 series was assigned to a six-car formation for "Hakucho" and a four-car formation for "Tsugaru" (after 2010). In addition, intermediate car units for additional cars were arranged, allowing for expanded eight-car formations during peak seasons and weekends.
From around 2004, the underfloor and bogies were changed to gray. In 2010, the orientation of the formations was changed for the purpose of unifying the on-board facilities with the 789 series. It supported transportation on the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line until its retirement with the abolition of "Hakucho" due to the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in March 2016.
