Series 223-1000 is a commuter train by JR West that debuted in 1995, introduced in conjunction with the recovery from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and assigned to the Special Rapid Service.
The lead cars feature a streamlined front with large curved glass, similar to the 221 Series, and have a top speed of 130 km/h to support the faster Special Rapid Service.
- Since its debut, it has been active on the Tokaido Main Line and Sanyo Main Line, and in later years, the lower part of the lead car's obstacle deflector has been extended.
