Series 223-1000 is a suburban train model introduced by JR West in 1995, designed to serve as a rapid service train for the restoration efforts following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The train features a streamlined front with large curved glass, similar to the 221 Series, and has a maximum speed of 130 km/h to accommodate the high-speed requirements of rapid services. It has been operating on the Tokaido Main Line and the Sanyo Main Line since its debut and later modifications included extending the lower part of the obstacle deflector on the lead car.
