The 72/73 series was introduced as an improved version of the 63 series train and served as the standard commuter train in the Tokyo and Osaka metropolitan areas at the time. In later years, it was used to replace 17-meter class vehicles on local lines and was active until 1985. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, numerous variations emerged due to specification changes and body updates.

- Ventilators are pre-installed in KUHA79 and MOHA72 models; KUMOHA73 modernization modification offers a choice between old and new styles
- Lightning arresters are pre-installed
- Head and tail lights, as well as front display section, illuminate with bulb-colored LEDs
- Constant lighting circuit board with an on-off switch included for head and tail lights and the front display section
- Front display section utilizes color prisms to light up in near-white colors
- Printed part selection for the front display includes: "Omiya, Kamata, Hachioji, Hara Machida, Higashi Kanagawa, Isogo"
- Front destination boards include: "Omiya, Kamata, Hachioji, Hara Machida, Isogo, Higashi Kanagawa <-> Hachioji," suitable for use when combined with <98377>
- Equipped with TN couplers (SP) with piping
- Lead car driver’s cab side uses TN couplers with small draft gear
