Series 72/73 was introduced as the original four-door commuter train for busy routes such as those in the Tokyo metropolitan area. With the debut of the 101 and 103 series, these trains were repurposed for local lines in the suburbs of the metropolitan area, replacing pre-war model electric trains and continuing their active service. On the Yokohama line, they were in service until 1979, marking the final years of their operation in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
