The KOMU1 model was introduced in 1968, created by modifying the TOMU50000 model for container transportation on branch lines within Hokkaido, and was retired by 1977. In 1970, Japan National Railways launched a new 20ft class container coinciding with the operation of the container train "Sanyo Liner" between Nishi-Okayama and Sumidagawa. Production of this container size was continued by the privately-owned UC5 model.
