The KIHA40 series is a general-type diesel car that debuted in 1977. The KIHA40 type 2000 series was introduced primarily for the West Japan region as a warm-climate vehicle, equipped with double-hung passenger windows. Vehicles owned by JR West have undergone engine replacements and vehicle updates, resulting in significant changes to their exterior appearance. Currently, the vehicles assigned to the Goto General Rolling Stock Depot, Okayama Railcar District, operate throughout the Tsuyama Line, Kibi Line (Momotaro Line), and the Himeshin Line between Tsuyama and Chugoku Katsuyama. In this region, a distinguishing feature from around 2017 is the conversion of headlights to white LED, along with the addition of jumper plug receptacles on the front.
