The KIHA40 series is a general-type diesel car that debuted in 1977. The KIHA40 series, model 2000, was introduced primarily as a warm-climate vehicle for the Western Japan region, featuring double-hung passenger windows. Vehicles owned by JR West have undergone engine replacements and vehicle refurbishments, resulting in significant changes in appearance. Currently, the vehicles belonging to the Goto General Vehicle Office Okayama Railcar Division are actively operated on the entire Tsuyama Line, Kibi Line (Momotaro Line), and the Himase Line between Tsuyama and Chugoku-Katsuyama.
The vehicles in this region have been updated with additional jumper cable receptacles on the front, and from around 2017, the headlights were replaced with white LEDs, which is a notable feature.
